Congratulations! You are the proud (and exhausted) parent of a 1-year-old. Just as newborns are very capable in their own way, your 1-year-old is very capable, too. He can understand simple requests, say a few words and shake his head when he disagrees. Language develops rapidly now, to the extent that toddlers are learning between six and ten words per day!
