Learning Stages

Windsocks are great for both spring and fall. Your child can use them to identify what direction the wind is coming from, and windsocks are beautiful to look at. Follow these instructions to guide your child as she creates a colorful windsock:

  1. Have your child cut various shapes from different colored pieces of paper or foil and glue them onto the outside of the tube or cup. Continue to decorate using glitter, sparkly stickers, sequins, etc.
  2. Cut 14-inch strips of crepe paper streamers or strips of fabric and glue to the inside bottom of the windsock.
  3. Hole punch the top of the tube and tie yarn in a large ring.
  4. Hang outside where you can watch it catch the wind.

Ask your child why we might want to know the direction of the wind (to predict the weather and storms, to assist airline pilots). Help your child to build connections!
