Let new readers make mistakes
When you hear your child make a mistake while reading, try not to jump in with the correct word. Instead, watch to see if she detects the mistake herself. If she doesn't stop to correct the mistake, ask a question like "Does that make sense?" or "Does that sound right?" By asking these questions you are helping her to self-correct as she reads. Encourage her to reread the line, look for clues within a word or think about what would make sense in the sentence or story. Strong readers constantly check for understanding as they read.
